Thank you from Mary Guy - 2011 Freedom to Move Walk and Wheel

I am so excited!!! This year was our best year ever for raising money at our annual Freedom to Move Walk and Wheel for Dystonia Medical Research. Thank you so much for all your hard work. We raised $16,000. Congratulations and thank you to all the participants and the people that sponsored them. Special thanks go to Dwayne Backer who had another personal best collecting $4715.If you add in the $1500 from Wal-Mart his total comes to $6215. With money from DMRF Canada I was delighted to give out prize money. Dwayne won a $100 gift certificate for the highest earner. Gift certificates for $50 were given to the top two families that earned the most. They went to Team Guy, who raised a total of $5135 and Team Gagne who came in second with a total of $1441.00 with $511.50 of that coming from the Sgt Rick McDonald Memorial Fund.

Members from the Elizabeth Fry Chapter IODE came out to support the cause. I was happy to see a new family, the Colvin’s, come out. Also new member Wendy Williams helped at the desk registering walkers along with my experienced crew of Brenda Morris, Sue Leroux and Lise Depatie. Thank you ladies. Coco Lariviere’s family came out to support her as always and raised $1097.50. I was also glad to see the Thompson family out for the walk. Emily from SNAP was there to take pictures with Curtis Thompson following her with my camera. Pauline Backer did a brief interview in French for CBC French Radio. It aired the next morning on the news. Thanks Pauline. France Gelinas, MPP for Nickel Belt arrived as we began the door prizes and finished the day with a brief talk about the coalition of all the brain disorders. These are some of the highlights of our amazing morning.

Special thanks to Linda Thompson for getting all the food donated and collecting it all with the help of her son, Curtis. Thank you to our food sponsors Tim Horton’s (Hanmer), Dumas YIG, Metro (Val Caron) and Neil’s YIG. Thanks also to Len Shymkiw for his dazzling BBQ skills along with his helper Curtis Thompson. Thanks to the Thompson’s for bringing out their BBQ year after year.

We were pleased to see an article about Dwayne Backer in the “Sudbury Star”. Also “Northern Life” promoted our walk. Bob Kirwan of “ Valley East Today” promoted the walk and also included a picture with the results of our walk in his on-line paper.

We had some great door prizes and I want to thank the donors: Plaza 69 Pharmacy, Staples on the Kingsway, I.D.A. Dowling, Silver City, M&M Meats, Rusty Cellars, Topper’s Pizza, Scotiabank, Barrydowne Paint & Wallpaper, Wal-Mart, Querney’s Office Plus and Chico’s Bowl & Sports Lounge. Thanks also to the staff at the Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre who were a great help. Thanks also to Allison and Carolyn of the St. John Ambulance for coming out to the walk to make sure that everyone was safe.

We had our best walk ever! Thank you to everyone for making it such a success!
