Message from GTA Group Leader

The GTA support group had a wonderful year in 2015 focused on relaxation and exercises themes. We began last year learning relaxation and breathing techniques from a fitness professional. In the Spring, we had a stress reduction seminar to "Refuel your energy tank" given us tips on how to cope with daily stress; then later on in the year, the Toronto Public Heath did a workshop with us on "Fall Prevention"; toward the end of the year, we saw Dr. Hogan's dvd encouraging people with dystonia to do the proper stretch exercises. We hope to reinforce the benefits of exercising physically and reducing anxiety and stress for our mental health in the coming year. 

Last summer, we also enjoyed a bbq lunch where we met some new members, and the DMRFC Executive Director, Stefanie Ince was formally introduced to the members. We end the year with a great Christmas party and volunteers appreciations.  We're grateful to see many members volunteered in the group.  On behalf of the DMRFC and Greater Toronto Area support group, we sincerely appreciate all their help throughout the year, especially those who are affected with dystonia. Our support group wouldn't be a success without any of their efforts!

In 2016 this year, keeping our wellness goal in place, we've added Art as part of our therapeutic program, still aiming to start each meeting with a 15 mins relaxation and stretch exercise; and then people can mingle over some healthy refreshments, people can share their stories and experiences with dystonia and any update news.  For the remaining hour, we will carry on doing program activities previously planned, or listen to a guest speaker on health talk or subjects of interests seminars.  One of our priority topics for discussion will be Understanding anxiety and depression and managing stress.
